Collaborative patterns and design for OER: new approaches to improve the design and reuse of resources
Contents |
Overview
The workshop will introduce participants to use a range of tools, methods and approaches to designing and evaluating Open Educational Resources (OERs). The session will explore how learning design and pedagogical pattern methodologies can be used to help with the more effective design and reuse of resources. Examples will be taken from existing free and open resources, such as the OERs in available in OpenLearn. Participants will have a chance to try out some of the tools that have been developed as part of OLnet and to discuss relevance and application to their own practice. See also the related OLnet cloudscape and the OULDI cloudscape, which have additional resources. Further information and workshop resources will be made available in Cloudworks.
The workshop will be of interest to those involved in course development or those providing support roles to course teams on the design process and how new approaches and technologies can be incorporated.
You will be using the CompendiumLD software. Please bring your own laptop if you have one, if you haven’t let us know and we will provide workshop machines.

Data from workshop
This section contains the data that were obtained during the workshop. In each case we present the source and quality of the data, any observations on the data acquisition process, as well as the further processing stages. In separate sections, processed data and research findings are presented, as draft documents.
Recording transcriptions
In this subsection, we include transcriptions of recordings.
The first set of transcriptions refers to 6 extracts from the video-audio recordings, obtained by the standard system of the Ambient Laboratory (8 video channels and 1 audio channel). It is necessary to mention that the quality of sound was rather poor due to fact that audio parameters were set to default the day before the workshop.
After an initial joint view of the complete stream by Elpida and Yannis, it was decided to proceed with the transcription of 6 extracts that mainly collect group dicussions or presentations. The transcription was held by Elpida during the period of July 15 to July 23, 2009.
The following files provide the original transcriptions together with some processing. In this case, we followed a process similar to the one provided by a standard qualitative analysis tool, such as Nud*IST Nvivo, i.e. significant text passages were selected, put in a different colour, so that they could be assigned to the various categories.

Specific audio recordings
At specific workshop instances, Tina used an audio recorder and a pink camera in order to capture specific group interactions. The sound quality of the pink camera recording is very poor although some video images can be used to illustrate the process. Some of the audio recordings were transcribed by Elpida and provided below.
